Hymen 101
A crash course for your lady parts.

Normal Hymen - You've probably seen this graphic a billion times whether in a textbook or on your own body. This is the most common type of hymen. Ladies, if this is what you see, congrats!
Imperforate Hymen - Ladies, if you take a peek and don't see any opening, see your gyno ASAP! This hymen does not have an opening which is a problem especially when you start your period. If this goes unnoticed, your period blood will back up and you'll get some nasty pains and cramping.
Microperforate Hymen - If you're having difficulty inserting tampons, you might have a microperforate hymen. Ladies with this type of hymen might notice one small hole, or multiple small holes. Minor surgery is required to remove the tissue to create one vaginal opening.
Septate Hymen - Septate Sisters where you at?! This type of hymen is characterized by a vertical (occasionally horizontal) band of tissue that runs from the top to the bottom of the hymen (or left to right). This band of tissue can be thin (as shown above) or very thick. Minor surgery is required to remove this extra band ot tissue to create one vaginal opening.
